Emerging Technologies

This has been an emerging priority for ESP brought about by demand from members to support new teaching approaches within Scotland’s colleges, developments have been:

  • Virtual Welding - ESP have purchased a portable Virtual Welding Unit as a shared resource for the College network. This equipment will be an invaluable resource reducing consumables costs and allowing colleges to reach out to potential students in schools.
  • Immersive Hybrid Reality (iHR) - Virtual Working at Heights - ESP have been working with Herriot Watt University’s ‘ICE Project’ to develop virtual reality software packages suitable for use in schools and colleges as key training tools. One fixed and two mobile units will soon be available with ongoing development of the iHR and a VR App.
  • Distance Learning - ESP have established a distance learning partnership to develop online learning materials for candidates working further afield. Developments include HND Electrical Engineering and ISO9001 Quality Management.
  • Augmented Reality - In March 2016 a joint European funding bid was submitted with partners from France, Italy, Portugal and Estonia. The project to support the development of innovative and competitive professional approaches in the building sector using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology has been approved.
